I ran a poll from my Twitter account and asked my followers what they thought my first blog should be about. It was a tight race between two choices but ultimately building a new closet prevailed.

Rebuilding a closet can be tricky. You might ask yourself, where do I start? How can I achieve the look I want? Or, I see this celebrity and I like the way that person dresses but I don’t know what I’m doing.

Yes, I get it. I’ve been through it. So here’s what we do. It’s important to evaluate your individual style first. What do you have a lot of in your closet?

Jeans, sneakers, dresses? Whatever it is, you want a change in your style, your dress and how you express yourself.

Next, picture the style you’re trying to achieve through building your new closet.

In my experience, I wanted to dress more girlie. I’m seen as a sporty girl who dresses up for special occasions, but I wanted to present a classier look on the day-to-day basis. I own enough T-shirts to clothe a whole country. I’m not kidding. I would wear a T-shirt and shorts or jeans outfit 24/7. I honestly just loved T-shirts, and I still do.

But here’s how I changed that.

I stopped buying T-shirts when I went shopping. Every time I walked into Forever21, Urban Outfitters, or saw some shirts for sale in a store, I had to walk away. As cute as the words “Bitches who Brunch” on a shirt was, I had to walk away. And everyone knows I love a good brunch. Instead I would buy a dress or nice blouse, something I knew I didn’t have.

There was my first step into rebuilding my closet. It’s a true commitment. We all have the styles we love and can’t pass up. Whether it’s a nice flowy dress or the must-have heels.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering, but how do I get my entire closet to fit my new look? Not all of us are blessed to go out on a $1,000 shopping spree to fulfill our every closet need. Because we’re ballin’ on a budget over here, it will take time to rebuild. And you have to accept that. The key to remember is that you only need a few key pieces to recycle into your outfits to achieve your new look.

For example, if you are normally a person who is on the more girlie side but want to achieve an edgy street style, stop buying what you already have. Instead, wear a denim jacket over it. That jacket will take your look soaring in ways you wouldn’t even think of. A jacket completes a look, although some don’t know that. Adding that denim jacket to a dress you already own with a sneaker or bootie instead of a sandal or heel will really change the look.

That is why you don’t need to spend so much money to change your closet. It’s subtle changes that will eventually take over in time.

Classics pieces are essential.

My advice is to buy two items per month to change your closet. If you can shop for more, by all means, go for it. But it doesn’t necessarily take a lot of money as it does smart ways to dress.

I hope I helped. If you want more specific advice or need additional commentary about YOU in particular, contact me! I’d love to help you.

I enjoy having my friends’ and followers’ opinions so keep in touch for the next poll, who knows? Maybe your choice will be featured next!

Jordie
