What to do with gifts you don't want

Well, the Christmas holiday has past and you're left with all of your goodies you received from Santa, friends and family.

While we would love to say our family knows us best, sometimes they can be the worst gift-givers. You know what I mean. When you specifically remember the color lipstick your aunt loves so you buy her a shade she'll wear from MAC, $17 lipstick, great right!? Then you open your gift from her and it's some cheap nail polish and some house slippers, both you'll never wear.

This could be seen as ungrateful, but if you're still thankful that the person thought of you enough to purchase a gift for you (so we think), wrap it (or bag it), and wish you a Merry Christmas, that's appreciation.

This is saying, I'm appreciative but I'm going to secretly not ever use this gift.

We can't just let the gift collect dust. We have to do something with it. After all, it's not good to be wasteful.

Here are five ways to get rid of Christmas gifts you don't want:

  1. Re-gift it. You might know someone who would love it. Maybe pink nail polish isn't your color, but your sister loves it. Merry Christmas, sis!

  2. Return it. As long as the tag is still on it and the item has not been used or worn, most stores will accept it with or without a receipt. Get your store credit or money back and buy something you'll like. Money isn't wasted.

  3. Donate it. There are plenty of places, shelters, donation centers that will accept your Christmas sweater you didn't love. Someone else will gladly appreciate it.

  4. Sell it. People will buy anything, I've noticed. However, you don't want the person who got it for you to see you selling it. Advertise lightly on social media and see what comes up.

  5. Save it for next year's white elephant party. Hey, if you don't want it, it can always be a steal at a white elephant party. It'll be traded, swapped and sent home with a happy caretaker.

If all else fails, keep it and love it. Socks, candles, and makeup removing wipes are totally underrated gifts.

The funny thing is, I've never really gotten a gift I didn't like... I usually make use of everything I get whether I 100% love it or I'm 50/50 and can just find a way to make it work.

What is the worst Christmas gift you've received?

I've heard horror stories of receiving cheap house slippers, ugly scarves, out of date clothes, gift cards to places you don't shop. The list goes on. Comment and share your terrible gift experience.

Live life & Happy holidays!
