No More Selfies: Taking a Break

FASTING, WHAT?
My friends and I were talking about giving stuff up for Lent last night and while I’m not Catholic, I respect the concept of giving up food or a habit to practice self-discipline. The hopes are that you become closer to God through this period of fasting from whatever it is you choose.
I have chosen selfies. Simple, right? Not actually. Through all of the different social media platforms out there, I’ve been almost obsessed with taking daily selfies. Sometimes I’m not even cute or presentable enough to take a selfie, but it’s become a habit of something I do out of boredom.
As well as giving up selfies for Lent, I will also not use Snapchat. Snapchat is part of the root of my selfie addiction. It gives you all these funny and beautiful filters that keep you coming back to take and send snaps to friends and add to your story.
IT'S FOR THE BEST
The hardest part about giving up Snapchat is losing my streaks. A streak is when you’ve consistently snapped back and forth with a person without skipping a day. I have reached up to and over 100 days and after today that will all be gone. In reality, it means nothing. I’m worried about a streak and Snapchat and some people across the world are worried about when they’ll have their next meal. #FirstWorldProbs
Through giving up selfies and Snapchat I hope that I will be able to seek God with less distractions and kind of “un-plug” myself. In place of where the Snapchat app was on my phone, I’ve replaced it with the Bible app, so anytime I’d try to click on Snapchat I can read a scripture or a story instead. I also plan to read more of the books I have during this time to reach my goal of completing five books in 2017.
LAST YEAR AND BEYOND
Last year, I gave up cursing for Lent. While cursing is not actually hurting anyone, it’s not proper language nor a way to pleasantly speak to people. It really opened my eyes to see how much I curse and how much people around me curse. I would hate to slip up and curse at the wrong moment, so it’s just best to become self-aware and control it now.
If any of my readers are giving up something for Lent and care to share, comment below and let’s talk about it. I know that Lent is also practiced in private, so I respect that as well. Happy Ash Wednesday to all my Catholic folks out there.

Jordan
